What is a domain

A domain (or domain name) is the human-readable web address used to find a website (e.g., google.com). It serves as an easy-to-remember stand-in for a computer’s numerical IP address

Yes, you can register as many domain names as you want. There are no limits on how many domains an individual or business can own, provided they are available and you are willing to pay the registration and renewal fees.

Registering multiple domains is a common and strategic practice that offers several benefits:
  • Brand Protection: You can secure different extensions (like .co.za, .com, or .net) to prevent competitors or bad actors from impersonating your brand.
  • Typo-squatting Prevention: Registering common misspellings of your brand name ensures you do not lose traffic to mistyped URLs.
  • Targeted Markets: You can use specific country-code domains (e.g., .co.za for South Africa, .co.uk for the UK) to target local audiences and build regional trust.

Yes, you can transfer a domain name to a new registrar or to another person. Moving a domain only changes where it is managed, not your website content. Most domain transfers take a few minutes to a few days to process.

Transferring to a New Registrar

If you are moving a domain between hosting providers follow these steps:

Give it time

Make sure it’s been 7+ days for cCTLDs and 60+ days for gTLDs since registration or the last transfer took place.

Get your domain ready

The domain must be registered with a registrar and ready for transfer.

Be prepared

If you want to transfer a gTLD, ensure that your domain has been unlocked by your current registrant and not on hold.

Get your code

Have your authorisation code ready, also sometimes referred to as an EPP or transfer code.

Know your email

You’ll need access to the current Registrant email for cCTLDS, or the new Registrant email for gTLDs.

Domain registration costs range from R105 to R3200 per year, depending on the extension. Local domains like .co.za are the most affordable, while premium or global options like .com cost slightly more.

To register a domain name, you simply need a unique name idea, valid contact details (name, address, email), and an annual payment method. You do not need a registered business to get a domain. The setup requires selecting an available web address, paying an annual fee to a registrar, and providing your registrant information.

1. Requirements to Register a Domain
  • A Unique Name: Your desired name (e.g., your name or brand) must not be already taken by someone else.
  • A Domain Extension: Choose a Top-Level Domain (TLD) like .com, .co.za, or .net.
  • Registrant Information: Your full legal name, physical address, email address, and phone number. (This information is securely stored, and you can add domain privacy to hide your personal details from public view).
  • Payment Method: A credit card, debit card, or PayPal to pay the annual registration fee.
2. What Happens After?
  • Domain Privacy: Optional but highly recommended to prevent spam and protect your personal contact details.
  • Web Hosting: While a domain acts as your “digital address,” you will also need web hosting to store your website’s files so it can be seen online.
  • DNS Connection: You will need to link your domain to your hosting platform using a process called DNS (Domain Name System) configuration

Why do I need a hosting package
You need a hosting package to store your website’s files (images, code, text) on a powerful, continuously connected server so it is accessible to people worldwide 24/7. Without it, your domain name has nowhere to point, and your website cannot exist online.
What Does a Hosting Package Do?
  • 24/7 Accessibility: It ensures your website remains live, secure, and viewable to visitors at all times.
  • Storage & Bandwidth: It provides the digital storage space for your site’s content and the bandwidth (data transfer) required to handle your traffic.
  • Technical Maintenance: Providers handle the hardware maintenance, server monitoring, and core security, saving you from managing expensive in-house equipment.
  • Security & Backups: Good packages include built-in protections like firewalls, malware scanning, SSL certificates, and automatic backups to keep your data safe.
A hosting package (or web hosting plan) is a service that provides the server space, security, and bandwidth needed to make your website accessible on the internet. It acts like “rent” for digital real estate where all your website’s files, images, and databases are stored so users can visit your site 24/7.
Hosting packages are tailored to different needs, traffic levels, and budgets. The most common types include:
  • Shared Hosting: Multiple websites share the same server resources. It is the most affordable and beginner-friendly option, making it ideal for personal blogs or small business sites.
  • VPS (Virtual Private Server) Hosting: You share a server, but your portion is isolated with guaranteed resources. This is best for medium-to-large sites that need more power and control.
  • Dedicated Hosting: You rent an entire server exclusively for your website. It provides maximum speed, storage, and security, suited for high-traffic platforms.
  • Cloud Hosting: Your site utilizes a network of multiple servers. It ensures high availability, meaning your site stays online even if one physical server experiences issues.
To pick the right web hosting package, first define your website’s exact needs—such as expected traffic, storage, and technical requirements. Then, compare core options: Shared Hosting (best for beginners on a budget), VPS or Cloud Hosting (ideal for growing sites needing power), or Dedicated Hosting (for high-traffic enterprise sites).
Choosing the right web hosting comes down to matching your website’s technical needs and budget with the appropriate server resources. Follow this step-by-step framework to make the best choice:
1. Assess Your Technical Requirements
  • Traffic Estimates: How many visitors do you expect initially? Small blogs do fine with shared hosting, while e-commerce stores need higher bandwidth to handle surges in traffic.
  • Storage & Media: Do you have a simple text-based site or a heavy portfolio with lots of high-resolution images and video?
2. Choose the Right Hosting Tier
  • Shared Hosting: Your site shares server resources (RAM, CPU) with others.
    • Best for: Beginner blogs, portfolios, and small local business sites.
    • Pros/Cons: Very cheap, most commonly used but can slow down if another site on your server gets a traffic spike.
  • Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting: Your site shares a physical server but has allocated, guaranteed resources.
    • Best for: Growing blogs, medium-sized e-commerce, and sites requiring specific software configurations.
    • Pros/Cons: More powerful and secure, higher monthly costs (POA).
  • Dedicated Hosting: You rent an entire physical server exclusively for your website.
    • Best for: Massive websites, high-traffic portals, and strict enterprise security needs.
    • Pros/Cons: Maximum performance and control. High monthly costs (POA).
  • Managed WordPress Hosting: The hosting provider optimizes the server specifically for WordPress, automatically handling updates, backups, and security.
    • Best for: Anyone specifically running WordPress who wants a hands-off technical experience.
3. Check for Essential Features
Before checking out, verify that the package includes:
  • Security: Free SSL certificates (look for ‘HTTPS’ capabilities) and automatic daily backups.
  • Support: Customer support via live chat or phone.
  • Email: Does the package include custom domain email addresses (e.g., info@yourdomain.com)?
  • Scalability: Can you easily upgrade your plan as your website grows?

Website hosting packages typically range from R100 to R3,600+ per month, depending on your needs. Basic shared hosting for personal blogs or local small business websites starts at around R100 to R500 per month, while resource-heavy Virtual Private Server (VPS) or Dedicated hosting for large projects costs considerably more.

How many pages can I have designed
There is no technical limit to the number of pages a website can have. Content management platforms (like WordPress) and site builders allow unlimited pages, though practical limits depend on your hosting storage and server resources.
The ideal number of pages depends entirely on your goals:
  • Simple / Portfolio Sites: 3 to 5 pages (Home, About, Services/Work, Contact).
  • Small Business Sites: 5 to 30 pages (Adding specific service pages, blog, and FAQ sections).
  • E-commerce Sites: 10 to 1,000+ pages (Each product usually requires its own unique page).
A survey of user discussions and web design best practices indicates a consensus that it is better to prioritize clear, high-quality, and user-friendly navigation over a high page count. Rather than launching with hundreds of pages, most experts recommend starting with a smaller launchpad website and adding content over time as your business grows.
